Description

The National Maritime Museum

Located in the heart of Amsterdam in a historical building built in 1656 as a former storehouse for the Admiralty. Be inspired by one of the world’s biggest maritime collections, artifacts and art. We are trendsetting, accessible and culturally relevant, with innovative ways of telling our stories.

Exhibition | Republic At Sea
This gallery is a great place to start your visit to the National Maritime Museum. It’s an exhibition that tells how the Netherlands is linked to the sea via trade and war. Admirals were heroes that rose and fell (usually in battle) within a few years, while countries could be best of friends and sworn enemies within the same time. It also covers daily life in the Netherlands as a republic from the 17th and 18th centuries onwards.

Docked Ship | East Indiaman Amsterdam ( *Due to major maintenance the ship cannot be visited from 3 Sep 2020 – end of March 2021)
Step back in time and onto a replica 1749 VOC East Indiaman ship called ‘Amsterdam’. It’s docked right beside the National Maritime Museum. Here, you’ll experience a ship from the so-called Dutch ‘golden age’, life-like displays about sea travel, squeezing into the captain’s quarters, firing a canon, or hanging in a sailor’s hammock. Board into the ship’s bow and you can take an exciting VR voyage over central Amsterdam. Experience life in a bustling city harbor at the beginning of the 17th century.

Clipper Stad Amsterdam
During the maintenance of the East Indiaman, the ship Clipper Stad Amsterdam will moor at the National Maritime Museum as from 12 September 2020 to 1 September 2021. The ship can only be visited every Wednesday and Sunday between 11.00-16.00. Read more about the Clipper on this page.
