Description

Admire the classical and medieval architecture of Provence with visits to the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard and the historic hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence. Explore the ancient Roman city of Glanum, near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and admire 'L'Antiquariat' set in a field of olive trees, a landscape painted many times by Van Gogh.

If you have any interest in Roman and medieval history, or simply a fascination for aesthetics, you will appreciate this five-hour tour of some of Provence's most important stone monuments. Dating back to Roman times, the Pont du Gard, a stone aqueduct bridge, was built by the Romans to supply Nimes with water and remains one of the most visited monuments in Provence. Dating back to the 1st century, it is one of the best-preserved aqueducts built during the Roman Empire and is truly impressive in size. Continue on to Les Baux de Provence, a picturesque medieval village situated on a rocky spur of the Alpilles. With its pedestrianised historic centre and surrounded by olive groves producing a renowned olive oil, Les Baux de Provence is well worth a visit.

Explore the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Glanum, near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Photographic opportunities abound with views of the 'antiquities' (a triumphal arch and the Julian mausoleum) and the surrounding field of olive trees. Eventually, you will understand why this landscape inspired Van Gogh to paint it over and over again.
