Trastevere Walking Tour
This tour will bring you closer to the history, legends and folklore of Tiber Island and one of the most significant neighborhoods of Rome: Trastevere.
We will lead you to the hidden wonders of its squares, its hidden gems, its churches and its monuments.
The visit will start from Ponte Fabricio (Fabric Bridge), where you will meet our expert guide, ready to lead you to the only island in the eternal city that takes its name from the river that so warmly embraces it: the Tiber.
You will cross Ponte Fabricio, the oldest Roman bridge still in use, which connects the left bank of the Tiber River with the island. You will travel back in time to retrace the steps of the Greeks and Romans and discover the events that took place on this small strip of land.
The island - formed from volcanic rocks and river sediments accumulated over millennia - was sacred to the Romans. Many legends are linked to its unique "ship" shape. Visiting it will reveal all the stories about its origins and give you a better understanding of what many believe to be the smallest inhabited island in the world.
The tour will continue with a walk in the most beautiful neighborhood of Rome: Trastevere.
Along the way you will come across the Basilica of St. Chrysogonus, one of the oldest Roman basilicas. This basilica is usually not crowded with tourists, that's why we wanted to take you there: the frescoes, paintings and remains of the original church are what you will love most in this 17th century masterpiece.
The walk continues towards Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere with its splendid Basilica, the first official place of Christian worship in Rome. The Basilica is a splendid example of beauty and art treasures. You will be struck by its magnificent mosaics, which you will admire from the outside. You will be particularly struck by the thirteenth-century mosaic of the upper part of the facade, as well as by the splendid mosaics of the apse dating back to the time of Innocent II, or by those of Pietro Cavallini from the thirteenth century, depicting the stories of the Virgin Mary.
After leaving the Basilica, your tour will continue to discover the romantic and characteristic alleys and Piazza San Cosimato, with the church of the same name dating back to the 10th century (which can be visited from the outside).
Walking through the alleys you will reach Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi, where you will admire the beautiful baroque Church of San Francesco a Ripa, a place of great spirituality in the heart of Rome. The beautiful baroque church houses the cell, now a Sanctuary, where Saint Francis was welcomed during his papal visits to Rome.
San Francesco a Ripa is also a place of art, where works of inestimable value are collected and preserved, such as the "Ecstasy of the Blessed Ludovica" by Bernini or the works of Giorgio De Chirico.
Your experience will end by passing by the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, on the way back to Tiber Island.
