Sigurtà Park description

The ancient history of the Sigurtà Garden Park located in Valeggio sul Mincio dates back to May 14, 1407, when, during the Venetian domination, the patrician Gerolamo Nicolò Contarini purchased the entire property which at the time had a purely agricultural function.

It was in fact a farm or rather, as ancient documents tell us, a "brolo cinto de mura" : lands cultivated with fodder enclosed within a high and secure wall. Within the brolo there was also another space: a small and geometric garden, adjacent to the main house, dedicated to the leisure of the nobles.
The ancient origins of the Sigurtà Garden Park date back to here.

Sigurtà is a truly unique and enchanting place, within which you can admire countless historical and naturalistic attractions of extraordinary beauty, just think that in the months of March and April alone up to a million tulips bloom in the park . The Sigurtà garden , however, is not only this, you will find space for history and culture because inside the Castelletto there are kept the literary, historical and scientific memories that once belonged to the Sigurtà family.

Sigurtà Park opening

Finally on March 8, 2025, Sigurtà Park reopens to the public.

Attractions

What to see at the Sigurtà Garden Park

What are the points of interest and attractions of the Park?

  • AVENUE OF ROSES
Viale delle Rose is certainly the image with which the Sigurtà Garden Park has made itself known throughout the world. Along its one kilometer length, more than 30,000 Queen Elizabeth and Hybrid Polyantha & Floribunda roses bloom each spring.
  • THE MAZE
At the center of the labyrinth stands a tower which has a dome covered in copper and two opposite staircases: for visitors to reach the tower will be a real reward for the solution, as from above it will be possible to admire the natural attractions of the Garden.
  • LARGE TURF
The Great Turf is the largest expanse of the entire Park. In the middle of this soft green mantle are the Laghetti Fioriti, surrounded by a romantic Weeping Willow. On the other hand, water lilies and aquatic hibiscuses emerge among the waters, among which the Japanese Koi carp dart lively.
  • THE HORIZONTAL SUNDIAL
The sundial is characterized by a geometric pattern electronically engraved on the dial. The elements that make it up represent the "Sun source of life" in a symbolic-figurative vision.
  • MEDICINAL PLANTS
A small area is hidden inside the park where the Sigurtà family has decided to cultivate about 40 different plants with precious therapeutic properties: the Garden of Medicinal Plants . At its center stands the statue of a lion who seems to want to watch over the ancient herbs that grow before him.
  • THE WATER GARDENS
The Water Gardens recall the landscapes portrayed in the canvases of the Impressionist masters. One can observe, in particular, the effect of the reflection of the tower of the Scaliger Castle in the mirrors of water, where rustic and tropical water lilies of sophisticated beauty delicately float.
  • THE HERMITAGE
The Hermitage of Laura , this is the original name, was built in 1792. Through the facade you can access the contemplation of the statue representing the Madonna.
  • MONUMENT TO CARLO SIGURTA'
The sculptor Dante Carpigiani wanted to represent Carlo Sigurtà in one of his usual attitudes: with a serene face, kind eyes, his right hand gripping the inseparable stick of Bosso, the architect of the Park seems to welcome the visitors .
  • THE STONE OF YOUTH
Behind, on a rock slab framed by age-old Bossi trees, one can read the words of life of a hymn to youth in spirit and heart, the "creed" of the Sigurtà family.
  • THE CASTLE
The Castelletto is a crenellated building with neo-Gothic windows used as a "Sala d'Armi". In the last century the Castelletto was the site of round tables and scientific and literary meetings. Some scientists and Nobel laureates were guests of the Sigurtà family.
  • THE BIG OAK
The Great Oak is one of the attractions most loved by visitors to the Park and with its four centuries of age it is the oldest plant in the garden. This tree is considered a particularly interesting specimen thanks to the perfect harmony between the trunk and the crown
  • THE BOSSES
The Bossi are among the most characteristic inhabitants of the Sigurtà Garden Park . Unlike what happens in Italian gardens, the park's gardeners limit themselves to "stroking" the foliage of the box trees, thus obtaining bushes with particular and bizarre shapes.
  • THE EDUCATIONAL FARM
Donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys and ducks await you in the old farm of the Park.
  • LOVERS BENCH
The Park is a romantic place, thanks to the breathtaking sunsets, the 18 stretches of water, the many glimpses for unforgettable souvenir photos; the Park has decided to dedicate a special corner to couples: near the Hermitage, you can experience a romantic moment in the greenery or take a selfie on the lovers' bench surrounded by fabulous roses, a symbol of love.
